Health Office Information Specialist
Certificate Program


This one-year Health Office Information Specialist Certificate Program is designed to provide students with a comprehensive preparation of office procedures within an allied health environment. This certificate program offers students training in clerical duties such as filing, word processing/spreadsheet functions, billing procedures, appointment scheduling and telephone etiquette. Students are also expected to become familiar with medical terminology, insurance, CPT and diagnostic coding and the transcribing of medical documents.

The Health Office Information Specialist Certificate Program prepares students for office support positions in the allied health and medical fields such as physicians’ offices, hospitals, health care facilities or health insurance agencies.

During the spring semester students are placed in doctors’ offices, hospitals, health care or health-related insurance agencies.

Program Outcomes
1. Read, understand and prepare standard types of medical communications.
2. Understand and use the medical terminology required in speed dictation of medical correspondence, preparing forms, documents, and transcribed material.
3. Employ appropriate medical office procedures.
4. Understand and perform office accounting tasks.
5. Possess appropriate skills in the following software applications: operating system, word processing, spreadsheet and other software appropriate for the office environment.
6. Demonstrate proficiency in the use of ICD-9, CPT coding and computerized billing in entering and/or processing medical insurance claims.
7. Demonstrate speed and accuracy in keyboarding skills.
8. Understand the importance of confidentiality in dealing with medical insurance issues.
9. Have gained appropriate cooperative education experience in the field.
