Application Package to Admissions
NCC offers a variety of ESL classes to meet academic, professional and personal goals. Classes are scheduled to meet students' diverse needs, including evenings and Saturdays. The credit program focuses on writing so that students can succeed in college-level courses and get academic degrees or certificates. Some credit ESL classes can be used as foreign language electives.
The ESL Non-credit program starts at the beginning level and continues to the intermediate level of language proficiency. The ESL Non-credit core program features classes in reading/writing, listening/speaking and grammar. There are numerous elective and special focus classes (English for Specific Purposes/ESP) such as health care, business, computers, TOEFL preparation and conversation. Many non-credit students eventually pass into credit ESL and pursue academic coursework.
New students must complete an application and take a placement exam on computer as well as write a short essay. Tutoring, advising and other support services are available as well as a digital language lab to enhance classroom learning. For more information on ESL classes, please visit the ESL office in E206 or call 203-857-7176. Go to the Admissions Office, East Campus, for an application ($20) and to make an appointment for the ESL placement test soon. ESL classes are very popular. Take the placement test and register early!
High Intermediate and Advanced ESL courses (ESL 142, 152 and 192) can be counted as foreign language/humanities electives toward graduation with the following stipulations: Students may apply up to 10 ESL credits toward the degree in General Studies; all other degrees and programs will accept no more than 6 ESL credits.
Students must demonstrate mastery of listening, speaking, reading and writing skills before progressing to the next level. After successful completion of the ESL sequence, students progress to English 101 (ENG 101). Language and computer laboratories as well as portfolio assessment may be required in four and six-credit courses.
