WELCOME to the NCC Humanities Department Home Page!
The Humanities Department at NCC brings together a variety of disciplines
concerned with inquiry and expression.
Faculty and courses for a dynamic world
Our faculty members are experts in fields ranging from art to architecture, from
film to foreign languages. Together, we strive to develop programs and courses
that keep NCC up to date in a vast array of subject areas.
Some subject areas in our department, such as digital photography, web design
and television production, reflect rapid developments in technology and its
impact on the way we communicate. Other areas of study within the department
have evolved alongside developments in our world culture. Philosophy course
offerings, for example, have recently expanded to address professional ethics in
medicine, engineering and computer security;
foreign language courses have
recently been added in Arabic and Mandarin Chinese. Even the buildings in which
we teach are connected to the humanities: through our Architecture, Interior
Design, and Construction Technology programs, students explore the physical
world we live in, and how to create a world that expresses human ideals.
A curriculum that reaches beyond the classroom
Faculty also oversee a number of clubs and host events to extend humanities
education beyond the classroom. The Speech Club hosts an annual public speaking
contest; the Philosophy Club meets to discuss developments in current events.
The Art Club enriches students experiences in art through exposure to a variety
of art media, museum trips, lectures, workshops and access to research materials
through the library. Members of the Acting Club stage their own work and bring
outside productions to the school, and the college choir and digital songwriting
students perform on and off campus. The European Club hosts field trips to
museums and theaters.
NCC’s student newspaper, The Voice, was a finalist for the 2005 College Media
Association Pacemaker award, a major national citation. The newspaper publishes
10 times a year and all NCC students are welcome to join its staff.
