Humanities Department

The Humanities Department at NCC brings together a variety of disciplines concerned with inquiry and expression. Within the department, you will find faculty and courses in Communication and Speech, Foreign Languages, Interdisciplinary Studies, Music, Philosophy, and Theater.   The department's Communication Arts Program specializes in mass media communication, with options in Film and Television Production, Journalism, and Media Studies; the program also offers a certificate in Film and Television Production.

Faculty and courses for a dynamic world

In each academic field represented in the Humanities, students will study both the impact of recent political and technological change on our culture, and the timeless perspectives that have shaped our lives and thought.

• Communication courses explore the way we interact as individuals and cultures, and offer critical examination of the digital technology that has revolutionized the media;
• foreign language courses include languages from Europe, Latin America, the Middle East and Asia;
• Music and  theater courses, along with the Interdisciplinary Studies course "The Creative Voice," explore ways in which thoughts are shaped into works of art;
• Philosophy course offerings address professional ethics in medicine, engineering and computer security.

 Through the Humanities, students explore the physical world we live in, and how to create a world that expresses human ideals.

A curriculum that reaches beyond the classroom

Faculty also oversee a number of clubs and host events to extend humanities education beyond the classroom. The Speech Club hosts an semi-annual public speaking contest; the Philosophy Club meets to discuss developments in current events.  Musical Theater students stage their work each spring and the college choir performs each semester . The Euro Club hosts field trips to museums and theaters.

NCC's student newspaper, "The Voice," was a finalist for the 2005 College Media Association Pacemaker award, a major national citation. The newspaper publishes 10 times a year and all NCC students are welcome to join its staff. Its office is in East 115 and the staff meets Tuesdays and Thursdays at 4 p.m.
