Mohamad Hafez | DESPERATE CARGO

DESPERATE CARGO, an installation by Mohamad Hafez opens at the NCC East Campus Gallery on Wednesday, August 31, 2016. The exhibition is a multimedia installation focusing on the Syrian war and the current refugee crisis, its focal point being an actual lifeboat suspended from the ceiling.

Hafez describes the work as “floating in space…lost in motion…suspended in time…just like many refugees seeking a new future, a hope to exist” and “aims to shine light on the unseen side of immigrating and to give a glimpse of what Syrians are running from. Capsized in the middle of the sea, drowning in high waves…refusing it's internationally ‘unwanted’ cargo.” Hafez’s work reflects his deep interest in the cross-disciplinary exploration of street art and the realistic, yet ironic sculptural work. He purposefully infuses a stark contrast between the scenes he creates and the messages imbued in his work. Messages could be verses from the holy Qur’an, audio recordings from his homeland, or other elements of Islamic heritage reflected in the architectural typography. Qur’anic calligraphy is presented as spray painted acts of revolutionary protest or as an audio loop from a hidden source to defy the iron fist of dictatorship regimes in the region.

An artist’s talk and reception will be held on Wednesday, September 21 from 6:30 to 8:00 pm. The show closes Saturday, October 22, 2016.

A Syrian artist and architect, Mohamad Hafez was born in Damascus, raised in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and educated in the Midwestern United States. Expressing the juxtaposition of East and West within him, Hafez’s art reflects the political turmoil in the Middle East through the compilation of found objects, paint and scrap metal. Using his architectural skills, Hafez creates surrealistic Middle Eastern streetscapes that are architectural in their appearance yet politically charged in their content. His artwork has recently been featured in four highly acclaimed exhibitions and profiled in Connecticut Public Radio and The New York Times.

The NCC Art Gallery hours are Monday–Friday 7:00 am–10:00 pm, Saturday 8:00 am–5:00 pm, closed on Sunday. For further information contact Susan Hardesty, Director of the NCC Art Gallery, at shardesty@ncc.commnet.edu or 857.7197.
