Graphic Design Student Sherri Mola Designs Poster for 2012 Academic Festival

Sherri Mola designs Poster for NCC 2012 Academic FestivalGraphic Design student Sherri Mola designed the poster for the 2012 NCC Academic Festival Inspiration and Innovation: Transforming the World One Idea at a Time. The winning selection was chosen from more than twenty submissions in Cara Kacin’s Graphic Design II class.

Sherri Mola graduated from Iona College in May 2008 with a bachelor’s degree in Mass Communications (advertising concentration), and a minor in Fine and Performing Arts. Since graduating from Iona, Sherri worked in the advertising and marketing field for several prominent organizations in the community. Currently, Sherri is the Director of Marketing for Fisherman’s World in Norwalk. In January 2011, Sherri enrolled in Norwalk Community College's Graphic Design Certificate program to enrich and enhance her design and marketing skills. She is expected to graduate in May 2012.

Sherri Mola designs Poster for NCC 2012 Academic Festival“When choosing a design for the Academic Festival’s poster, I wanted to come up with an idea that worked conceptually and graphically which lead me to use of the dandelion. The dandelion itself represents inspiration, the process of being mentally stimulated to do or feel something. The seeds being dispersed into the air represent innovation, making change in something established by introducing something new. The seeds eventually landing and growing or transforming into a new flower represents the tagline of the festival, transforming the world one idea at a time. Also, the idea of the dandelion going through these phases is just like inspiration and innovation, it is a never-ending cycle. The image in the poster is just that, a dandelion blowing with its seeds being dispersed into the air. I decided to make the poster very clean and simple by only using two colors, white and green so that the image of the dandelion speaks for itself. The color green was chosen design wise because is bright and grabs ones attention. Conceptually the color green represents growth, nature, spring, renewal and rebirth.”

The goal of the Academic Festival is to explore the sources of creativity and new ideas, as well as how those ideas transform into innovations that can change individual lives and the world as a whole. The keynote speaker this year will be John Prendergast. He is a human rights activist and best-selling author who has worked for peace in Africa for more than 25 years. He is the co-founder of the Enough Project, an initiative to end genocide and crimes against humanity affiliated with the Center for American Progress. More than 30 presentations, displays, and poster sessions by faculty and students will take place from 9:45 a.m. to 2:20 p.m., followed by the keynote address at 2:30 p.m., with a reception and book signing afterward. Among the events offered is a discussion of John Prendergast’s most recent book Unlikely Brothers, moderated by Professor Hannelore Moeckel-Rieke.

The day–long festival, which takes place on Wednesday, April 4, 2012, is a celebration of interdisciplinary study and the thriving intellectual life of our college and community.
